The TOGs are a golf society from Tynemouth Golf Club. A group of like-minded golf nuts who enjoy the game so much that they gather every Saturday at 9:30am throughout the bleak Northumbrian winter months to compete at golf, but always in the true spirit of the game.
The origins of the TOGs go back to the old TGC Winter League, which was basically a Doubles Winter League. It was run by long standing members, Mike Morton and Giolla Cooper, both of whom are sadly no longer with us.
The TOGS Winter League, as it is today, was started up in 2002-03 with 18 members. The format for the league is hugely different - it is now a straight forward singles stableford competition. Every Saturday morning, between the beginning of October and the end of March, we turn up come rain, hail or shine. The league runs for approximately 26 weeks and a minimum of 6 scores are required to qualify. The player with the best 6 score aggregate will be the TOGS Champion.
The first winner of the League was Mr Doug Walker.
Another season has come to an end, and thanks to our band of new members, produced the most hotly contested year ever. The final Saturday was a battle royale, with no fewer than five Togs still in with realistic chance of grabbing the title. In the end, Murray Newell was a well deserving winner, in only in his third year, last year's Singles Knock-out champ has gone one better and added the TOG's Winter League Champion to his CV. Darryl Ridley and Duncan McCree were this year's bridesmaids. Eddy Stothert and newcomer Ian Jeffrey were joint fourth. The wooden Spoon was claimed by Steve Todd.
The Singles Knock-out was won by Will Smith, who defeated Duncan Mccree 2up in the final.
